Change - Boingo

Today is June 14th, 2025. The song of the day is "Change" by Boingo.

It's also my 50th, birthday. 50! Crazy.
And, yes, for a long time I considered this my absolute favorite song ever. I think it still ranks up there. It's 16 minutes long, and it's a journey.  It...is also just deeply deeply personal for me this year.
Without going into it fully, I'll simply say, that I think that I can finally answer Danny's question with a "yes. I DO." (And... I think that I'm actually going to.)

Here are the lyrics:
Don't you ever wonder why, nothing ever seems to changeIf it does it's for the worse, seems it's just a modern curseSometimes when I take a peek outside of my little cage,Everyone looks so asleep, will they die before they wake
And, hey. . . Don't you know? We're just products of our time and Hey . . .What d'ya say? Show me yours, I'll show you mine
Better dumb and happy than smart and without any friendsBetter cute and better loud, better join up with the crowdKeep up or be left behind, there's a dust storm in my mindSeems I can't see straight these days, doesn't matter anywayHey . . . Don't you know? We're just products of our times andHey, what d'ya say? Show me yours, I'll show you mine
Hey, what d'ya say? Hey, what d'ya say? Please don't ever -Oh God, here's that question now. The one that makes me go insaneI'd gladly tear my heart out if you never, never, never, never change
Do you want to change? Do you want to change right now?Do you want to change . . . I like my stupid life, just the way it isAnd I wouldn't even change it for a thousand flying pigs
And I like you just the way you are, I like your face just the way it isAnd I wouldn't even change it for a herd of screaming kidsAnd I like you just the way you are, I like you though you may not like me backI would dazzle you with brilliance, if I only had the knack
'Cause I like you just the way you are, I like this life just the way it isAnd the castles all around me, have been melting now for yearsAnd it kills my brain to think of all the time I wasted hereAll the efforts, sweat, and broken hearts, the screaming and the tears
And I'm dreaming again . . . Floating in a pool of mudTry to get back where I was and I don't really care
Got a little talking to, by the mirror in my room, and I don't really care . . .Whispering voices from the dead, come from underneath my bedAnd I don't really care . . .
I like my stupid life just the way it isAnd the chaos that surrounds me like a flock of screaming pigsAnd it hurts my brain to think of all the stupid things I've saidAnd if I could change the future I would change the past insteadAnd I'm dreaming again . . . and I'm dreaming again . . .
Baby - sometimes I worry about youSometimes you're so far away, tell me what to doI say, Baby . . . sometimes I worry about youSometimes I just can't believe everything you doI say, Baby . . . sometimes I worry about youEvery day I feel the same, don't you feel it tooI say, Baby . . . sometimes I worry about meSeems I'm falling down a lot, in between the scenesI say, Baby . . . sometimes I worry about meGetting harder all the time, harder now to seeI say, Baby . . . sometimes I worry about meLight another cigarette, have another dream
It's the same thing every day, nothing ever seems to change and I . . .
Do you really want to change?Testaments and growing pains. Tranquilizers for the soul.Nothing ventured, nothing gained - evolution's cruelest jokeWhy is everyone upset? I once knew but I forget. Something happened,Something strange, something it appears has changed
Hey . . . Don't you know? We're just products of our timesAnd hey, what d'ya say? Show me yours, I'll show you mine
Hey, what d'ya say? Hey, what d'ya say? Please don't ever -Oh God, here's that question now, the one that makes me go insaneI'd gladly tear my heart out if you never, never, never, never change

88 lines about my 44th birthday

Woke up early, plain to see, I was no longer 43

Yeah, not gonna rhyme this whole thing, despite *really* wanting to. I just don't have the creative juices right now. If I had conceived of the idea like a week ago, to give myself some time to come up with stuff, maybe. But, eh. This is the timeline we're stuck in. Whatchya gonna do?

So, yeah. Birthday.

I woke up at like 4, because I'm old, and because I'm relatively unhealthy, and because my sleep patterns are all jacked up. (On the bright side, it's almost been a month since I checked my work email at home! Having given up that habit has been a VAST improvement for my mental well being. So, see, things CAN get better!)

Anyway. Woke up around 4, and tried to get back to sleep for another hour. Finally got up and made my way into the day's routine.

I put on some of Rhett's beard oil - I dont really know that it does anything for my beard, but I do like the smell. And I went to work.

Work was actually ...good today! Fridays are historically extremely busy and stressful. But today was... not so much. I was able to leave the office to go to lunch (!!) AND took time out of my day to be sung to by everyone (in addition to me, another coworker has his birthday today, and another one had his yesterday, so a huge cake was bought for the 3 of us, and a gaggle of coworkers crooned Happy Birthday to us). And I recieved cupcakes, and Mtn Dew. Oh, and a gift card to Olive Garden.

I got texts wishing me happy birthday from 4 different people, and the weather was not unbearably hot out when I left work. (There was even a 25% chance of thunderstorms this afternoon/evening, but, as per usual, that's fizzled out)

When I got home, I received cards and hugs from the younger kids, and Steph showed me that I've got tickets to go see Rhett & Link next Friday. Hooray!!

I fed the turtlepeep, and made my 315th OWN episode, and had chicken fajitas for dinner and will probably watch some season 3 Survivor in about ten minutes. All in all, not a bad birthday.

(I didn't count, and I know it totally isn't, but wouldn't it be awesome/hilarious/weird if this really IS 88 lines??)

43

pretty good bday.
Worked, which was eh, but not all that bad. Saren bought me sodas, Wendy brought in a strawberry cake, and Joni got me a gift card to Amazon.
Then we went to dinner at Peter Piper Pizza (because i'm a grown up) and bought some new board games ("Unearth" and "Hey, That's My Fish")
uploaded the one year anniversary vlog post for OK What Now
and played some Mario Party Ten.
blogged, and now I'm going to go to bed - because I'm old, and going to bed at 930 at night is a freaking awesome present, shut up, you'll understand when you're older.

Our bean is a teen

To celebrate we went to Gravady, had Sonic for lunch, took her to Clare's for her to get new fake nails, and later there will be pizza, popcorn and Potter (we're working our way thru the series by book & movie, Azkaban the book was finished last night, so the movie will be watched in a few hours).
All in all, a pretty great day. (Although I still can't believe she's a teenager now!!)

Happy Birthday, Irina-bean!!

Halfway to 70

So it's Flag Day.

Last night I had a disturbing dream.
Keeping in mind that a) people's dreams are always less interesting to anyone hearing about them than the one who had them, and b) describing dreams usually takes much less time than the dream itself, here's what happened:

It was a post apocalyptic setting. The details of which were apparently not important enough for my brain to create, but I knew that a large percentage of the population had died off, fairly recently.

Survivors began to congregate, as they do in such tales.
I suggested that we go to the library to gather books on plumbing, gardening [real life intrusion!], and...I had some other topic that I thought was vital, but I forget now. But, you know, knowledge is power and all that, so that was the plan.

On the way to the libe, I picked up on some less than kind vibes coming from a young guy near the back of the group.

At one point he even told me, "You're going to die unexpectedly."

Well, that certainly increased the feeling of dread that was creeping over the dream.

Anyway. We get to the library, and we begin searching for books, splitting up to cover more ground quicker.

Naturally, I end up alone with Threat Guy, and two other people. Threat Guy (man, it would be nice if dream-people came pre-equiped with names, no?) removed a gun from his jacket, and I'm in full-on panic mode. But one of the other people in the room with us said, "Don't worry, Patrick. You don't die here."

Hearing this prophecy (I really don't know why, but that's the sense I got - what this guy said was actually preordained, and just...prophetic), anyway, hearing this prophecy instantly calmed me.
I was at complete and utter peace....and that's when Threat Guy shot me in the back of the head.

And then, at that exact instant, I woke up because Saren was screaming about a bug in her room.

It was 1am. Happy Birthday!!

The remainder of the day was surprisingly less dramatic.

At work I received Happy Birthday wishes from about 13 different people, with roughly 4 of them asking me why I didn't take the day off. Heh.
I also got free lunch (no such thing!), 4 bags of Skittles, a bag of barbecue potato chips, and a cupcake.

When I got home, I walked into the girls jumping out from various hiding places to wish me happy birthday, and homemade cards from them all. Not surprisingly, many of them were chinchilla related.

Oh, yes. I'm 35 now, so...chinchilla day, right?

Well... no.

A few days ago, Steph said (paraphrasing): "I didn't say you'd get a chinchilla when you turn thirty-five. I said 'forty-five'."

So, 10 years until I get the 'chilla. Mark the calendars - 6/14/20.

(Reminder: Get this promise in writing.)

But, now Steph is making dinner - and a cake - and later I'm going to make good on my Birthday Resolution #2 (which is to start writing, daily, again). (Resolution #1 is to exercise daily. Completed!)

So, all in all, a pretty good Flag Day.

6 more weeks of winter

Apparently Phil saw his shadow (again!), so according to folklore, we're due for six more weeks of winter. Of course, it was 62 degrees out today, so I won't complain with another month and a half of that type of weather.

Yesterday was busy.
In addition to the birthday celebration of Irina, I also got my haircut, and Buffybowl 8* happened.

*Looking back over the years, I've never quite pinpointed exactly what number it is. But from here on out, it's officially going to be that yesterday's was the 8th one. Now, if only I can remember that for next year.

For Irina's birthday, we ate at both DQ and Chuck E. Cheese. Paragons of health are we!
That being said, she greatly enjoyed the outings. Especially going to Sunset Park for a while in the afternoon in order to enjoy the awesome "winter" weather we're currently experiencing.
We also ventured into Toys 'R' Us, where we found that they had WiiFit in stock. Woo! The girls have been spending all day tight rope walking and hula-hooping and doing yoga. Fun!

The Buffybowl game was another showdown between Adam and the Scoobies. Adam, of course, won, because Saren was Evil, and Saren always wins. (She's claiming that she's going to play as Good next year. I'm typing this as a way of reminding her of this fact.)
Actually, I think that Buffy would've taken Adam out ...if he'd been on the board from the beginning!! [Yes, due to an error by the Powers That Be, Adam didn't get placed on the board until about halfway through the game, and was thus completely safe from any attacks. Of course, in Season 4, Adam didn't really show up until about halfway through, so in that way it was more accurate.]
But, in the end, even with the Glove of Mahna-Mahna, Buffy could not defeat the evil demon, and was killed by Spike. Sad.

The commercials we witnessed were ...okay. We didn't see much of them, but from all reports of what I've read/seen today, I don't think we're any poorer for having not seen them. We did see the 3-D commercials, and we did have our 3-D glasses, but none of us were overly impressed with the results. Apparently NBC went and lessened the effects so that people who didn't have the glasses would be able to see the spots with less problems, which is... really a bonehead move, actually. Why go through all the trouble of promoting the technology if you're not going to actually use it? [sigh] We're looking forward to Chuck tonight, which is also supposed to be in 3-D, but we like Chuck regardless of how many Ds it's in. :)

Today I had an interview with the local PBS affiliate. I'm feeling confident about it, but dumbly I forgot to ask, "When will you make a decision?" so now...it's a waiting game, then.

Top Ten

Heh.

Today being Saren's decade-mark, here are the top ten events of the day (in no particular order).

10. Seeing a rainbow
9. Riding the 'tomato' at Las Vegas Mini Gran Prix
8. Getting rained on, while at Las Vegas Mini Gran
7. Getting cards and presents from her sisters
6. Getting cards and presents from her friends
5. Playing for hours with her friends at the park
4. Cake!
3. Taking pictures with Steph's camera
2. Turning ten! Certainly doesn't happen everyday.
1. Being awesome. But then, she does that on a daily basis.

Happy 10th Birthday, Saren!!

Half a minute birthday

I am such a dork!

Anyway. 32's good so far.

1) No Zombies. (Which was a lot of fun participating in. The site responsible is already planning a sequel. It's still being worked out whether the next apocalypse will be another zombie infusion or something more (or less) sinister. Personally, I'd love to see a world-wide version of Wolf go down. [um...in the blogosphere. Real life werewolf attacks - not so much.])

2) Awesome gifts from my family and coworkers and cards from the same, as well as from some internet weirdos.
Here's the breakdown:
A 24 pack of Pepsi (hee!)
20 dollar gift card to Best Buy
20 dollar gift card to Del Taco
Pursuit of Happyness on DVD
Gremlins on DVD
The Goonies on DVD
Willow on DVD
2 bags of Beef Jerky
1 handmade book about cats from Harper
6 birthday cards total (3 from family, 2 from internet weirdos, 1 from work)
2000 extra points on the Wii Virtual channel - I haven't downloaded anything extra from there yet, though.

3) Um. I guess there isn't a 3. Oh, except that tomorrow is Friday. And payday. So, that's of the good.

All the rest hath 31

5am - woke up
520am - had Trix for breakfast (nutritious start to the new age)
6am - left for the bus
610am - got on the bus, read all the way (I'm rereading the Otherland series, currently am in book 2: The River of Blue Fire)
659am - got off the bus, walked to the corner 7-11
703am - bought a Super Big Gulp and a pack of Big Red chewing gum
715am - got to work
@ work, had people sing happy birthday to me, got cake (more sugar!!), a card, and some presents, dealt with Bill (it was my birthday, shouldn't that have NOT happened?), cursed Warner Bros., and planned on leaving at 330pm.
340pm - left work
403pm - ordered a late lunch at Dairy Queen
430ish - food finally arrives
540ish - got home, opened presents from the family: A Superman baseball cap from Saren, a Pink Floyd t-shirt (with a pig on it) from Harper, and a new cd player/alarm clock from Steph. Yay!
7pm - watched Mirrormask.
9pm - 11pm - started blogging, watched "AFI's 100 years, 100 cheers" on CBS. I still am disappointed that Maximum Overdrive didn't end up as the #1 movie, but what are ya gonna do?

Now, it's 11pm, and I still have to get myself ready for bed and pick out my clothes for tomorrow, and wake up early (again) and I really should do some dishes before going to sleep. There truly are not enough hours in the day. Or night.

1 yr.

Crazy.

The years fly by much too quickly. I remember catching her slimy, tiny, perfect little body so well. That it was already one year ago that that happened is difficult to really truly grasp.

Fun was had today, of course. Saren stayed home from school, because she has a bit of a cold. Irina also has a runny nose and sneezing, so she was not as happy as any of us would have liked, but with Steph's brothers and mother over, and Stephanie making a delicious dinner and cake, things were good. It's way late, and everyone else is already in bed, and these type of things are always better experienced than explained, so I will simply post a pic or two, and be done with it.

Give me five!

Awww. Five years. Amazing.

She's had a great day so far, and it's not even done yet! (We still are going out to dinner to the place where a kid can be a kid.)

Stuff acquired: A big ass keyboard that is red with purple keys. Also has a microphone attached. Aside from pushing the "demo" button, though, it hasn't been used.

A new scooter.

A new birthday outfit. (Orange!)

Shrek 2 on DVD (cute kitty!!)

Some My Little Ponies.

A "Build your own tiara" book.

50 bucks to spend at Build a Bear Workshop. (Done! Sallie is purple, soft, plays a magical chime when you squeeze her foot, and has a cute little outfit.)

A Shrek M&Ms dispenser.

Some Polly Pockets.

Breakfast at The Original Pancake House.

Fun!

Quote of the day: "I like being five better than being four and a half!"

These pretzels...are making me thirty!!

What a week I'm having.

Now, for your viewing pleasure, I shall give you the rundown.

Monday: Well, yeah, I blogged that day, so most of it is covered already. Yay! That means less typing for me! And less reading for you!
Everybody wins! Flawless victory.

But. There was more to Monday than just what I've already written. Hmm.
Maybe not a flawless victory, then.

Okay. So, here's the Previously Unseen on Monday stuff:

After leaving work around 4:30, I arrived at home shortly before 5. Got the girls in the car and packed up, and left the house around 5:20. The movie, as I believe I mentioned in that entry, was to begin at 7pm. The clock, it was a ticking.

We got onto the freeway - which!! I almost forgot to mention this! The on ramp that had been closed since, like, 1430BC, has FINALLY reopened!!
Hooray!! So, anyway, we got on the freeway and everything was going smoothly ..until the Spaghetti Bowl. (They actually call it that. The Spaghetti Bowl is the section of the two interstates that cross each other. It's also a breeding ground for traffic jams and mass
frustration. Monday was no different.)

We got off the freeway several exits earlier than we needed to, and long story short (Heh. I realized while typing the freeway stuff that I was breaking the "don't tell them every step" rule that soandso I discussed later this week. Everything relates.)...where was I? Oh. Right. So we
got to Steph's mom's house near 6ish. Got the girls set up with grandma, and then we left for the theater. Both of us were hungry by that time, and, as my better half mentioned in her blog, she tried to talk me out of going to the movie altogether. I must admit, I was tempted. The idea
of just hanging out with my wife, sans children, was highly appealing.
Next time, I swear. This time, we had a date with the Dark Knight to keep.

We arrived at the Orleans at 6:40. Went to the ticket counter - an elderly man standing in front of us was asking Steph all these questions
about the movies, "What's Madagascar?" "It's a cartoon." "Oh. Well,
forget that....Cinderella Man is that boxing one, right?" and so on. We
got our tickets - which read BATMAN BEGINS (PR), and I made a lame joke
about how the movie was going to be about Batman doing Public Relations.

We got into the theater at 6:50, and ...it was packed. There was a
gabillion people there, and the number of seats was a gabillion minus
three. There was a section of empty seats in a pretty good spot, but
they were marked off with tape, and labeled, "Media ID" or "Media ID
Required" or something. soandso asked me if I had a Media ID, and I
laughed and laughed until I realized that it was more sad than funny
that my station is so ...not professional enough to provide such a thing
for me. Or any of it's employees, really.

Anyway. I ran into Scott, who was working the event (he was handing out
the free posters and whatnot) and I asked him about the Media section.
He pointed me in the direction of a woman who appeared to be in charge.
I asked her about it, explaining that I "worked for the WB". She said
that she couldn't put me there, because there were a lot of people who
"worked for the WB, or for the other sponsors". Or a lot of people who
CLAIMED to work for the sponsors. I mean, really there was no way that I
could've proven that I actually am employed by them. Well, I mean, I
could've driven down to the station with her, punched in the security
code to the building and shown her my office. But I think we would've
missed the movie.

So instead, In Charge Lady did some searching, and somehow found two
empty seats next to each other - about the 4th or 5th row back, so we
were closer to the front than we normally like, but beggars can't be
choosers - and Steph and I sat down and waited.

The trailers started, and there was only one. It was for Dukes of
Hazard
, which looks extremely skippable.

Then, Batman Begins ...began.

[Begin Spoiler for major f'in' spoilers for Batman Begins - Highlight to
view]
It was awesome.

The whole retelling of the Batman mythology, and the fact that the movie
focused on BATMAN instead of one of the villains. This definitely washed
out the bad taste that Batman and Robin left (and who thought that was
possible? I mean, Jesus Christ, that movie sucked).

It was awesome to see Bruce Wayne as a child, and to actually get to
know Bruce Wayne, both as a child and as the 20 something that he
becomes. It's great to actually see him learn how to fight - and it
fills me with geeky glee that Ra's Al Ghol (or however you spell it -
Racecar Cool is how Bizarro says it [/ubernerd]) is in this movie at
all, let alone that he has such a huge role in a) shaping Batman and b)
the plot of the movie.

Learning how Batman gets his weapons - also cool. It's like this was the
Episode 3 of Batman. It fills in the pieces on WHY Bruce Wayne is who he
is.Plus, you get to see him kick criminal ass. Heh.

Moments I got goosebumps: When Batman makes his first appearance, and is
kicking the crap out of Falcone's thugs, and scaring them half to death
in the process, and one of them says, "What the hell are you?!?" "I'm
Batman." = Goosebumps!! I think it's partly because of the homage given
to the Burton film, but also it's just an awesome scene. Especially
since, if memory serves, he's hanging upside down when he says it. Hee!

Other goosebump moment - when Joey Potter...er, I mean Mrs. Tom
Cruise...I mean Katie Holmes - was on top of the roof and she asks
Batman's name. He says, "It's not who I am underneath, but what I do." -
a quote that she delivered to Bruce earlier in the movie - oh, man. The
goosebumps were there. (Yeah. I know. Cheesy goodness. What are ya gonna
do?)

Rolleyes moment: The ending. Or, rather, the not quite ending, with
Katie Holmes and Bruce Wayne. She knows who he is, but gives this speech
about how Bruce Wayne isn't Bruce Wayne anymore, because being Batman
has changed him. So they can't be together...but she kisses him anyway.
There needs to be a word that combines "rolleyes" and "huh?" Once that
word is coined, apply it to that scene.

Laughy moments: "Keep them entertained. Tell them that joke you know."

"I need it for ...spelunking."

"Drunken Billionaire Burns Down Mansion"

There were others, but I need to see it again.

Oh! You know what I just realized? That this was a movie based on a
comic book that didn't rely [heavily] on CGI! I mean, yeah, there
probably were computer generated images in the movie, but there was no
Jar Jar Binks. Batman didn't have super stretchy arms or anything like
that. Cool.

They left the movie open for sequels, and I'm sure that there will be,
and right now I don't have a problem with that. I do worry that
eventually, though, the franchise will degenerate into unbearable crap
that the original had become. But let's just see what happens, shall we?

[end spoiler]

Overall, it was a really good time. It was worth the freeness that we
paid to see it.

After it was over, the Steph and I were STARVING. (Oddly, while watching
the movie, I got so absorbed into the story, that my hunger went
unnoticed) We drove to an ATM to get some cash so we could get some
food. Steph discovered that you can get into the bank with ANY card that has a magnetic stripe on it.

After getting the money, I had to pee. Well, actually, I had needed to
pee since leaving the movie theater. We were near my work, so I
suggested that we stop in the building so I could use the restroom. We
did so, but we stayed downstairs. I had the urge to go upstairs to my
cubicle, but we were hungry, and so we didn't. Interesting.(read on to
see why)

We ate at Taco Bell's parking lot, then picked up the girls. Got home
around 11:30, and I posted my blog entry. Then went to sleep and that
was that. The end of my 20s. *sniff*

30!

Woke up, showered, dressed, got my lunch together, came to work. Arrived
around 7:15.

Walked upstairs, and on the door to the offices was a banner saying
"Happy Birthday". Turned the corner and came to my desk, only to
discover that it was completely covered in balloons and streamers and
two more Happy Birthday banners. Sitting on top of my computer monitor
was a plastic derby with Happy Birthday written on it, and a noise maker
attached to it with tape. I really do wish I had a camera to capture the
whole moment. The girls in accounting (who work near me) had apparently
decorated my desk Monday night after I had left. If Steph and I had come
upstairs Monday night, the surprise would've been ruined. Or, rather,
the surprise would've been ...surprised on me a lot sooner than expected.

Eventually my embarrassment at the whole situation subsided.

I did wear my Birthday hat for a bit, and got plenty of comments
throughout the day. I also got two birthday cards. Included in one was a
gift card to Target from Tina. Aww. I'm liked.

Around 10:30 there was a sales pitch from two guys from Buena Vista
Television regarding the show Scrubs. Tina, Rob, and I sat in on it. It
was my first presentation such as this to bear witness to. Parts of it
were boring - why must the business world be so...stuffy?? - but overall
it was kinda a cool experience. Plus, I got to see an 8 minute videotape
pitch of Scrubs. I love that show. I hope our station ends up getting it
when it goes into syndication next year. We're gonna make an offer, so
we'll see. There are two other stations in town also in the running. I
guess it depends on who pays the most money for it.

After the meeting, it was time for lunch. I had two PB&J sandwiches. (I
was told by Raynette to document that fact. So that (in her words) when
"I'm an old man, I can remember that on my 30th birthday, I had peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch." So, there. Documented.

The Frederick's Fact was something I knew. (Where did HAL from the movie
2001: A Space Odyssey obtain his name? [begin spoiler for the answer -
highlight to view] IBM. Take the letter of the alphabet before each
letter from IBM, and you get HAL
. [end spoiler]

Around 2pm, while I was in Tina's office talking to her, a crowd of
about 10 coworkers came into her office carrying an ice cream cake with
candles in it, singing "Happy Birthday to You" By the time they were
done, I was bright red with embarasment. In fact, my birthday "wish" was
that the embarrassment would go away. (I didn't mention that to anyone
at the time. I do have SOME tact.) It kinda did, because after I blew
out the candles, everyone clapped and then immediately zoomed back to
their offices. A few people stuck around for pieces of cake (and it was
very yummy) but there was a lot left for me to take home at the end of
the day.

It was around 3:43pm, which is what time it is now, that I started to
work on this massive list of programming changes for the reminder of
June and all of July. I wanted to finish the changes up, and send out
the accompanying email before I left for the day. Unfortunately, it took
longer than expected. Long story short (ha!) I didn't get out of here
until 5:20.

I got home around six, and I still hadn't decided where to eat. (I
wasn't hungry. Cake and PB&Js being the reason)

The girls and Steph had half-melted cake, then we left. We wound up
eating at Applebee's. Because it is close to Target, and because it is
pretty yummy, and just because.

Then we went to Target, and looked around, but I didn't spend any of my
gift card. Still haven't. Although I discovered that Ben Folds and
Garbage both have new CDs out (Songs for Silverman and Bleed Like Me, respectively)! Too many choices!! Maybe if CDs were
cheaper, I'd've bought them both. (Of course, I also had American Idiot,
With Teeth, and In Your Honor [Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, and Foo
Fighters, respectively] to choose from. Lesson? CDs should cost under
six dollars.)

We went home and there were two messages on the machine. One from my
sister, and one from my dad. It was already 10pm, so I didn't call
either of them back. Also, because I am a horrible brother/son.

None of us were tired, so we opted to watch a movie.

Punch Drunk Love. Which I wound up giving 2 stars on Netflix, but after
watching the Special Futures (heh.) on the DVD, I want to give a 1. This
movie was bad. Because it was pointless, and didn't explain itself, and
had many many things that were there, apparently, just to be there. The
Special Features were worse, though. The deleted scenes? So. Stupid. The
thing called "Blossoms and Blood"? Made. Zero. Sense. I really liked the
song that was on there, but what the fuck, man? Why was it called
Blossoms and Blood? There were no flowers. I didn't see any blood. And
it just seemed to be a montage of the events of the movie. A whuh? This
movie could've used a director's commentary, because it just didn't make
sense. Or at least, I didn't get it. Steph hated it worse than I did,
and for other reasons, which she may go into on her blog, but I doubt
she will because the movie isn't worth talking about even as much as I
already have. Moving on.

Eventually, the girls fell asleep, and then Steph and I stayed up, and
then Steph went to bed, and then I stayed up longer because I just
couldn't sleep. At 4:55am, I called Tina's voicemail and informed her I
wouldn't be coming in tomorrow...today...which is now yesterday. Time! Ack!

Anyway, I went to sleep at five in the morning. Woke up around 8:45, and
couldn't go back to sleep. They say when you get older that you sleep
less. I guess I was finding this out the hard way.

So the 15th. Um. Aside from going to the DMV to get my license renewed
(finally), I dont' think there's much to report on that day. [oh - side note - apparently my vision, it is getting worse. My right eye is now 20/70. But they still passed me. I've noticed my eyesight worsening over the past ...year or so, and have considered making blog entries about it (tentative titles: Doctorb, my eyes! or I can see, I can see, I can see I'm going blind. Maybe someday (soon) I will.)
We watched Rabbit-Proof Fence, which was a pretty good flick, especially
considering how little there was to it. The girls and I went to the
grocery store and they helped me with the U-Scan thing. Um. I don't
know. Nothing too exciting (not that any of this has been, you know,
riveting, but I want to get as much down for the sake of prosperity [is
that the word I want? Bah. Words.]) Irina had trouble going to sleep -
again - but I was asleep by 1am, as was she.

Today, the 16th...Um. I don't know. I got a phone call from someone in
charge of the Homeschooling Convention that is taking place on the 24th
and 25th!!!! How freaky is it that he called (he was looking for our
station to do a community calendar mention type of thing - which, of
course, we don't have because our station sucks) - but how freaky is it
that he called, and got ME? Never underestimate the power of
coincidence, as I like to say. What else? I blogged hella long. Which,
while nothing great, has hopefully helped my word count some.
And there was something else, but I forget what. At lunch today, well,
first I drove to cash my check. When I got back, the ladies in the
lunchroom were watching tv, as usual. But instead of the Fucking News
(by the way, not our Fucking News. All news is (or can be) referred to
as Fucking News), anyway, instead of watching the Fucking News, they
were watching ESPN, or some shit, because on the TV was golf. Or should
I say Fucking Golf?
Golf!???!

One) I don't understand the appeal of playing golf. Hitting a ball into
a hole? Meh. I mean, yeah, mini golf is awesome. That sport is the shit,
but "real" golf? Don't get it.
b) I understand LESS the appeal of standing around watching people play
golf.
3) I REALLY don't get the appeal of watching golf on television.
And dont' get me started on the fact that there is such a thing as a
Professional Golfer. Those two words together...almost justification for
the extinction of the human race. Seriously.

Needless to say, I didn't stay in the lunchroom long.

What else can I bore everyone with? I think we'll go grocery shopping
tonight. Do a big trip, spend too much money, increase our imaginary
savings account at Smith's. And then maybe tonight I'll get to watch
Cube Zero. Of course, I doubt that anyone else in the family wants to
see that (Oreo??) so I may have to wait a bit to check it out.

I also learned today that the internet is not stupid. It's the people that populate
it. Heh.

In conclusion, you think you're tired from reading this? I had to type it!

They say it's your birthday!

Chuck E. Cheese has the most amazing ability to drain the power out of me. Not in a bad way, mind you, because we had fun, but now that I'm home, I'm beat.

Highlights of Saren's 6th birthday:

  • Waking up at 11am. (Not that unusual. Although normally we wait until noon)

  • Had breakfast at IHOP. (Funny face pancakes. And on the menu, Saren drew an invention of a robot/cat/monster with fire hair. Way cool.)

  • Two holes punched into her earlobes. (Yep. We got Saren's ears pierced. She had been wanting to get it done for a few weeks, and we told her that it would hurt just a little, but if she really wanted to go through with it, we'd do it. She did, so she now has fairly cute flower earrings in her ears. She was totally thrilled with herself about them, and this may have been the apex of the day for her.)

  • Talked to Annika. (With what seemed to be from my point of view a rather abrupt goodbye. Hey, bettie - was her decision to just suddenly go strange to you too?)

  • Dinner at Chuck E. Cheese. (Way WAYY!! overpriced pizza & drinks & tokens + family + friends + giant anthromorphic rat giving hugs + games that give tickets + cake + presents = happy Saren.)

I'd make a list of the presents she recieved, but I'd be here until next year. Suffice to say, materialistically, she's doing fine now. (not that she was suffering beforehand)

Now we're home, and I'm blogging about it, and Stephanie still needs to do her writing and I'm going to play Battleship with Saren. [up]

Happy Birthday, Saren. I love ya.

Today was pretty darn good.

Woke up a little earlier than normal (11am, rather than noon or 1). Had breakfast (pop-tarts. Yum!!). Logged on the computer long enough to see that I had email ("eee-mail" [/homestar]) from Jupe and Beth. (Thanks guys!!)

Showered, and then I set up Buffy. I was Evil. Steph was Oz and Xander. Saren (I nearly typed "Buffy" [hmmm]) was Willow and Buffy. The storyline we chose was The Judge.

I started off with Dru getting the Judge's arm right away. All I had to do was get her to the spot where he'd be "built" and all would be well. Except the male aspect of the Scoobies came along and blocked the entrance. Grr!
A few more turns went by, and with the combo of sunlight and Xander's (girly) punches, Dru ended up dust. The artifact went back into the corner, while Buffy and Xander teamed up on Darla.

Soon enough, Spike was the sole survivor. The only one to carry on the forces of darkness. Talk about a burden.

At about this time, Steph went to take her shower and didn't finish the game. [frown] But Saren happily took over. [yay]

Spike cornered Xander, and exacted revenge for his having killed the female half of the Foursome. Meanwhile, Willow got the Judge's arm, but died when it attacked her. Only (a pretty wounded) Buffy and Oz remained.

I attempted to summon Kathy, but she must've been busy, and cancelled her world domination appearance. Looked like Spike would have to go it alone.
But then! Buffy allowed herself to be sired! Huzzah! A vamped Buffy took on Oz, who fought back valiantly, but didn't stand a chance as a human.

The Judge never even showed up. And yet Evil won.

Mwahahahahahuh?

Anywhat, after that was cake. The girls and Stephanie all helped put on the frosting and M&M toppings. And then they sang "Happy Birthday to You", and followed it up with "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." [major grin]

The cake was yummy, and we listened to the Birthday CD while we ate.

Then Saren took pictures of me with her camera, and then I had to go to work.

I stopped for a Pepsi on the way in.
When I got here, Kris gave me a 2 liter bottle of Pepsi and said "Happy Birthday." Heh.

Work was pretty uneventful at first. There was a little hiccup with the server around 5pm, but no loss of revenue. Didn't even have to call anybody, as I handled the problem all by my lonesome. Yay me.

Around 6-ish, Beth called me! At first I was like, "Beth who?" and then I was like, "OH!!!" and then I was like, "Whoa!!" and then we talked for about an hour. Yay!

After that, I popped some popcorn and watched (the edited!!) version of Once More, With Feeling. The final tape of Buffy I've got here at work. And it still produced goosebumps. [smile]

Once that was done, I posted my "Aducation" post, and got a really nice PM from Bettie.

Then, it was onto blogger to blog about the days events.

Pretty soon I'll go home and have some pizza, and that will end the day. All in all, a rather enjoyable one. Tomorrow we wake up early to go out to breakfast with my family. Waking up early sucks. But yay for breakfast!!

Oh! As for the ranting, it's not worth the time. Jennifer is beneath me.

And she knows it.

Hope everyone had a wonderful day!

Interesting thing I noticed.
Osama bin Laden sends out a video tape, and our government has to go over it with a fine-toothed comb before giving it the okay to air, fearing there might be 'messages' to terrorist cells.

Saddam Hussein goes on the air LIVE with no fear that he may be sending messages at all?

[shrug] Whatever.

It's my wife's birthday!! WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!

Woo-hoo, witch-ay woman! [wink]

Hot damn, I'm a lucky guy. I'm also as funny as a kick in the crotch.

as funny as a kick in the crotch!!
